By changing the language, people with disabilitites also change attitudes and gain self-respect. R ather than hiding their disability, people are celebrating themselves through artistic expression, from painting to blogging, from dancing to writing poetry.

They set out to change social attitudes, often through direct action and nonviolent protest. They rolled wheelchairs down the streets of New York City and staged sit-ins in federal offices. They lobbied their senators and filed lawsuits. They wanted respect, not sympathy. Rather than be viewed as sick or suffering from medical problems, the disabled wanted to be seen as a group of people who enjoyed the same civil rights and freedoms as anyone else. Even medical advances did not always help. “There are people with serious spinal cord injuries who used to die within two weeks that now live 30 or 40 years.

The movement also promotes establishing disability studies in colleges and cataloguing the history of the disabilities movement. Some people call this a “quest for identity,” replacing society’s negative views with a positive, collective self-image.
